The wait is over! Agar Agar are back with their brand new single ‘Trouble’. The single follows their acclaimed debut album ‘The Dog And The Future’ (2018), which has received support from tastemakers around the world. With the new single release, the two also announce their new album!
It's been over two years since the French duo of Clara Cappagli and Armand Bultheel caused a sensation with the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘The Dog and The Future’, which received praise from critics and tastemaker media around the world. Musikexpress described their sound as ‘intricate head and heart music in a class of its own’, Deutschlandfunk Kultur made Agar Agar the newcomer of the week and INDIE Magazine labelled them the ‘French answer to electro pop’. Agar Agar quickly put themselves at the top of the French music scene and on the radar of international tastemaker media.
The duo's fascinating English-language vocals come from Clara Cappagli, the other half of Agar Agar is Armand Bultheel. In Agar Agar's music, a single track can contain drums and synthesisers from the 80s as well as modern elements and sounds. The mood can be tense and dark or romantic and surreal, almost magical. This is exactly what happens when a band mixes art-pop and techno with ease.
As creativity and live performance are two of the duo's strengths, Agar Agar will embark on a European tour starting in June with dates in London, Amsterdam, Switzerland and Brussels. The visual side of the new project will be heavily inspired by video games, as the band will release a video game along with the album to illustrate the album's story.
Agar Agar wrote the new single ‘Trouble’ in a moment of extreme boredom. It's a song about being trapped within finite boundaries, the need to break out, and the weariness that comes over you when escape is impossible. Every new attempt to escape leads to the same results in an eternal new beginning, and the fatigue taken to extremes finally turns into a neutral non-emotion. In the end, there is even a certain beauty to be found in this endless cycle of renewal: it is the poetry of repetition, over which you have total control because you know it by heart.
For the official video, Agar Agar teamed up with French interaction designer Mélanie Courtinat. There were several reasons for this: ‘First of all, her work around the social and philosophical issues raised by video games seems very relevant to us and resonates with the writing of our album. We are therefore confident that she will be able to understand the challenges of our music and, above all, develop a personal vision that remains coherent with the artistic direction we have already taken,’ explain Agar Agar themselves, adding: ’In addition, Mélanie Courtinat has already collaborated with Jonathan Coryn, an artist with whom we have been working for several years, in particular on the development of a video game - which could represent the fictional dimension of our music.’
‘Trouble’ is a playful track - in typical Agar Agar style - with jungle influences and bouncy synth lines. The new album ‘Player Non Player’ will be released on 20.01.2023
